Rings and Functions
Cultaral and Religous Rings
While no prominent world religion makes the wearing of rings
compulsory, some of these religions encourage such practices as an important
part of the practice for various positions and relations. The example that can be
cited here from our experience would be the Western tradition of using
wedding rings. This tradition isn’t obligatory in Christianity but through years
it has gained much cultural significance associated with a variety of symbols
so that one could easily find people to be surprised about someone who has
decided not to wear a ring, especially in America.
As a rule, rings used in such circumstances are mostly plain or
decorated by certain symbols, such as crests. As far as individual styles go,
they are limited to choosing size and material only.
Having said that, you could always incorporate these into your own personal style – a married man with a gold band around his finger tends to accessorize with other gold accessories (belt buckles, etc.) so as to maintain an aesthetic balance in his metal pieces. Now, if you are looking to make a statement with a ring – one that is religious or cultural like a wedding band – it comes off a bit cheap. Always go for quality over quantity.
Now let us face facts: most men view rings as an item that does not need to be changed once it is purchased. The only thing that a person needs is a ring that will serve him until the end of his life, and this ring will be the wedding one.
There are some men who decide to purchase a ring with some symbolic meaning behind it. This can be a family crest, a ring from college that was never removed after graduating from university, or the sign of the Masons. But even these men do not go far from tradition when it comes to the number of rings they wear: two is always enough for them.
However, the concept of a man wearing rings purely for aesthetic reasons has never been considered mainstream. It was usually associated with being “too much.” Nonetheless, if we consider modern tendencies, this niche can become popular quite soon.
Can men wear rings?
As far as there is any argument made in the case, relax because men can wear rings.
Many contemporary designs of jewelry may be unappealing to many men but there is nothing in itself wrong with the jewelry.
Rings have been gender-specific or gender-neutral throughout the entire history of mankind.
There are really just two main reasons why people argue against the wearing of rings by men. And they would be: It’s too feminine or It’s too showy.
Either way, both of these problems lie with the design of the specific ring rather than wearing rings.
There is only one real drawback to the concept of men wearing rings, and that is a class and tradition-minded one: men who are extremely traditional and wealthy, such as aristocrats and members of royal families in Britain and Europe, have an unspoken custom that rings are not considered
decent jewelry for any man to wear. This even applies to watch-wearing (they have servants who inform them of
the time whenever they require it), as well as wedding rings (only worn by the woman in most high-society unions).
So if you expect to be spending your time socializing with royalty and
aristocracy, perhaps avoid wearing rings.
Otherwise, it’s a perfectly valid choice, so continue reading to find out more about the style!
